Does it make you feel more attached to a character? Does it prevent souring your taste of certain characters you like? Can it feel unnecessary? Or does it not matter to you as long as you can get more screentime with them? As for me, if I really like a character, I'll want to see more of them. So, if a character that is near and dear to me dies, then it would of course be disappointing and upsetting not being able to see more of their potential or the lives they could have lived. The reason I ask this question is because often times I've seen people get upset over the betrayal of expectations whenever a character dies and is then brought back to life somehow. And it's sometime confusing to me since you would think these people would be relieved that a character lives rather than being upset that these characters didn't have more screentime or development.

Killing off a character only works if you don't do it excessively as at that point it is hard to develop sympathy for characters that die as they are all dropping like flies.

It depends on the situation, as always.
Sometimes it can be good, sometimes it can be bad, like a famous battle shounen that killed a fire character that had said 3 words in the movie and it looked like they killed an important character
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

Fake out deaths are the worst, if you are going for a tear jerker just commit to it.
Trying to have both the character death and the character is such a manipulative BS, no wonder everyone hates when that happens...

I like death because it adds reality to the stakes. Obviously character deaths can be done wrong, but they usually help the plot.

Cute girls being brutally murdered on screen is always tough to watch.
Usually when it happens it serves some sort of plot purpose.

But sometimes we have outliners like Symphogear or Blood-C, who seemingly do this as a shock factor.

If characters are to remain alive at the end, I would rather they not be killed off in the first place. I tend to view resurrection as an underhanded trick as @JaniSIr points out.

Only if that death would make a great impact to the plot, like pushing the story to its climax or helping character development. Some Anime just like to randomly kill off characters to look dark but in reality it's just edgy and pretentious.

Yes. But only if it can definitely help with plot development and can make the story more realistic

A character death should be earned or serve a narrative purpose. Then they can be a very impactfull part of a story. Or they can be goofy and funny - that's fine too. They can also be misused though in a attempt to create artificial drama, in which case they are more of a nuissance. Especially if those deaths aren't even permanent either.

So yeah - it depends.

Yes. Done right, it can establish the seriousness of the stakes the characters are dealing with.

My biggest complaint about the otherwise excellent Record of Lodoss War TV series is that it was too chicken-shit to kill off its characters.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

Very much depends on genre and is nuanced but i do feel like there's a spot where your tone requires people to die and that not happening for a variety of reasons (author likes the character a lot, author doesn't like killing in general, fans are super attached to the character, etc.) kinda sours the story a bit. A lot of anime I watch are action/adventure/shounen style works which focus around battle, wars, fighting and usually as stakes are upped the fact that all characters live a situation wears down the stakes as it continues to happen at each conflict. Think death is very powerful to shake of the status quo of your story, especially when your most establish characters arc begin ending. While I think there should be more deaths in a lot of works I don't think more death equals a better story. As an author/storyteller your works get to have the unrealisitc effect of everything mattering so when you make deaths not a big deal (either reversing it or characters dying for no reason or in unrealistic circumstances) you can just end up ruining your story.

If a character death is actually a natural conclusion to a character arc or narrative, then I can appreciate them. But I really hate fake out deaths (like some people have mentioned) or deaths just for the sake of having them. Like you can tell when a show or movie was just like, "we need someone to die here"- but it doesn't actually mean anything within the story it was trying to tell. The worst thing a character death can do is make me not even care when it happens, because it was set up so poorly.

So I think when done right, when they lead to the culmination of a character moment that truly makes sense- character deaths can be really impactful and memorable. I love when they're used to realistically raise the stakes and show us, the audience, exactly what we're dealing with.

Sometimes character deaths feel completely unnecessary, but most of the time they're for a reason. So they're not so bad.

I enjoy them when it's a character I dislike, lol.

Okay, but to be serious, they CAN work, but you have to do it right by making sure I'm able to connect with them in a sentimental level, either by giving them enough character depth or by just making them a generally likable character throughout the story. If I barely know much about the character or if they straight up made them absolutely detestable, I'm not gonna care if they end up kicking the bucket at some point in the series.

I love character deaths, however there is a caveat. It's more to do with what they're a mechanic of; Consequences. If your actions have no consequences, then there is no more danger. Even if you do die and then you overcome death somehow or come back from the dead, it's still gone. Since X can't die, i guess they have eternity to do whatever the hell they want as a pseudo-immortal.

This specifically is because it makes death meaningless. The most grave consequence of an action, meaningless. It also immediately eliminates any and all future worry or anxiety for said character, that no matter what they do they'll still be alive or can come back to achieve their goal or fulfill the plot.

Death itself is an immortalization process for your image of someone, one that stops evolving, where they stop existing and you appreciate the sum of their life. Due to that physical inexistence, you're forced to make decisions based on the effect a death has on you. Not only is it an opportunity for growth, it's a fact of life we all have to deal with, we only get 1 shot at it. The better a person is, the more important and impactful said death is. Death is a beautiful thing, when written well.

If it is needed within the context, it hads more than just pure shock factor and cheap melodrama and genuine character development for the MC, then yes.

Well, if a character who had no chance of surviving, just comes back. That kills the tension of an anime. If no one ever dies then the impact is less because they'll always get up.

I only feel attached if i liked the character prior. Sometimes i feel bad for the characters, especially if i either like them or they were just some innocent bystander caught in a bad situation.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

The death of significant characters present a big opportunity for the surviving characters to develop. Their demise presents a vacuum of responsibility that other characters can grow towards. An example is a death of a certain figure in the first half of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Their demise allowed someone else to step up and lead. An even better example is the death of a One Piece character:
